JOSEPH KOHNKE
Joseph Kohnke, an artist from Pasadena, California, transforms inert everyday objects into moving installations, creating works which seek to communicate ideas around various contemporary social issues. At ORANGE, Kohnke presents the work
Smart and Final, made up of a number of miniature oil wells. These objects, set in motion by motorised mechanisms, are made out of plastic knives and forks. With this work, Kohnke draws attention to the fact that oil is increasingly used in the production of objects we use today, including those for eating and drinking. Our dependency on this natural mineral oil is such that this exhaustible resource has become indispensable, just like the food we eat to stay alive.
